The temple was built between the year 161 and 166 CE by Antoninus Pius in honor of his wife. The temple was originally a polygonal structure surrounded by a portico with eight Corinthian columns on the façade. The temple was later converted into a church in the 7th century and now serves as the Church of Santi Faustina e Giovanna al Tempio dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo by the Catholic church.
