St. Nicholas Church of Ireland is an Anglican church located in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is the oldest church building in the town and is one of the two Church of Ireland churches in Carrickfergus. The church is part of the Diocese of Connor in the Province of Armagh. History The earliest records of a church dedicated to St. Nicholas in Carrickfergus date back to 1206, though the current building dates back to the 15th century. It was described as consisting of a chancel, nave, transept, and porch by the commissioners of the Church of Ireland in 1622, though later alterations changed it significantly, notably additions made in 1888 when a turret and spire were added in memory of Sir Robert Wallace MP, a local benefactor. Parts of the original 15th century building still remain, such as the south doorway and the south transept. Facts The church is a Grade B+ listed building and is of architectural, historical and social importance. It contains a variety of monuments, including those to the memory of General Sir David Ormsby, the first Baronet of Carrickfergus, and local merchant Sir George Browne’s. Services St. Nicholas Church of Ireland offers a range of services, including Holy Communion, Sunday School and Adult Sunday services as well as special services on Christmas Day, Easter Sunday and other days throughout the year. There are prayer meetings and Bible Study Groups. The church also offers a variety of outreach services, such as support for the Homeless and the Door of Hope Centre, a Crisis Centre for the people of Carrickfergus.
