St. Helena Catholic Church was founded in 1851, just four short years after St. Louis was incorporated as a city. Its founding was due largely to the efforts of Bishop Peter Richard Kenrick, the first bishop of St. Louis, and Willard Preyer, the first pastor of the parish. Together, they led the effort to establish a church, school and orphanage to serve the rapidly growing Irish Catholic community in the Central West End.
