History:

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum are located at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan in New York City. This memorial and museum commemorate and honor the 2,977 people killed in the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The idea for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum was conceived by two foundation members in 2002, who wanted to create a living memorial to the victims of 9/11. They worked to create a meaningful place where the memory of 9/11 and its victims would be honored and remembered. In 2003, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) was established to lead the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site. As part of the redevelopment process, the LMDC began working with the foundation members to create a memorial for the victims and celebrate their lives. The LMDC launched a design contest in April 2003 to find the right design to represent the memorial. The design submitted by Peter Walker and the firm Handel Architects, LLC was selected as the winner in 2004. The design featured two enormous voids in the footprint of the original Twin Towers, allowing light to penetrate into the museum space. In response to the tragedy, the memorial also included a grove of trees and a reflecting pool between the two voids. In 2008, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum officially opened on the 10th anniversary of the attacks to thousands of visitors. Over the past decade, the museum has become one of the most powerful symbols of the tragic attack, and an important place to remember all of those killed on that fateful day.
