History:

The Museum of Moscow’s History dates back to 1792, when a rivalry of private museums was won by architect Vasily Bazhenov, whose Moscow House of Curiosities was opened in 1796. The museum was acquired by Moscow's Crown Council in 1806, and renamed the Moscow City Museum. After the collections were enriched by purchases from the Provanov brothers and archaeological sites, it was moved to the Senate with its own separate premises in 1812. It was reorganized and renamed twice more in the 19th century. The first major expansion of the museum took place in 1837–1838, in order to accommodate artifacts from the city’s liberation from French occupation. Its renewed name of "The Museum of the History and Antiquities of Moscow" was given in 1842, when it was assigned to the Moscow University. In 1867 the museum was renamed again, receiving its current name of "The Museum of the History of Moscow". In 1896, due to lack of storage space, its collections were moved to the Artillery Museum. In the beginning of the 20th century the museum continued to expand its collections, with purchases from abroad and focusing on fine and applied arts. In the 1950s the museum launched its own archaeological expeditions in Moscow, uncovering and excavating new objects for its collection. The museum was moved to its present building in 1974. It is located inside the internationally acclaimed glass-domed Tretyakov Gallery. Today the museum consists of six departments and four research departments, and holds 11 million objects. Its permanent galleries are filled with interiors, objects, and monuments of of Moscow from the 15th to the 20th century.
