History:

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a monumental sculpture by Gutzon Borglum, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The mountain carvings of United States presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln are intended to communicate a message of "law, order, liberty, and devotion to progress." The carving was completed in 1941 and designated as a national memorial in 1925. The idea for the sculptures began in 1923, when sculptor and historian Doane Robinson wanted to create a sculpture in the Black Hills to draw more tourism to the area. He presented his ideas to the state legislature, who appointed a six-person commission including Gutzon Borglum to investigate the possibility of creating a sculpture. After two years of planning and research, Borglum began the project in 1927 and was chosen to finish the work by state legislators. Construction for the sculpture began in October 1927 and lasted an astounding 14 years. It housed nearly 400 people at its peak and ended costing nearly $1 million. Borglum supervised much of the work as well as his son Lincoln directly below him. During his time on the project, Borglum directed workers to carve Washington’s head first followed by Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The entire process was quite expensive and caused much controversy due to the use of dynamite and the amount of money required for the project. Some believed the money should go towards the relief of World War I veterans. The project was completed in October 1941 and was dedicated on July 3rd, 1941 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since its completion, the monument has been a major tourist destination for generations of Americans. In 2008, it was identified by the National Park Service as the fourth most visited daytrip destination in the United States.
