History:

Gripsholm Castle is a castle located in the town of Mariefred in Södermanland, Sweden. Built on an island in Lake Mälaren and constructed in 16th century, the castle has functioned as a royal residence since the 1500s and is the home of the Swedish Royal Portrait Collection. The earliest known mention of Gripsholm dates back to 1380, however the castle was largely destroyed during the 1520s as Gustav Vasa fought to reclaim the throne of Sweden. The castle was reconstructed and expanded in the 16th century under John III of Sweden. During 1630–1718 it served as a residence for the Swedish monarchy, who mainly resided at the nearby Royal Palace at Stockholm. A variety of events were held at Gripsholm over the centuries, including famous cultural events such as balls, plays, and concerts. Once Sweden's royalty moved to the Royal Palace in Stockholm in 1718, Gripsholm was used mainly for political guests and as a hunting lodge for the aristocracy. During the middle part of the 18th century, the castle was used as a prison for Swedish nobility. It continued in this role until 1935 when it became a museum and the home of the Swedish Royal Portrait Collection. Today, the collection includes over 4,000 paintings of Swedish royalty, as well as many portraits of foreign nobility dating from the 1500s to the present day. The castle has also become a popular tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Visit one of the famous monuments of Sweden with your friends and family.
