Golden Gate Park, located in San Francisco, California, is over 1,017 acres of natural beauty as well as a major destination for events and recreation. Golden Gate Park is the third most visited urban park in the United States and is considered one of the finest examples of a “natural” urban park in the world. The park was created in the late 1800s as a way to transform the vast sand dunes that engulfed much of the city. Following the city's founding in 1848, San Francisco had become a thriving metropolis by the late 1880s; however, the west side remained a desolate wasteland, a dry expanse of barren sand dunes along the Pacific Coast. In response to the need for open space in a growing city, local engineer and park advocate John McLaren took on the monumental task of transforming the dunes into a lush park. From 1892 to 1933, McLaren worked to carve out pathways, plant trees and vegetation, and establishing an array of plants, shrubs, and gardening designs throughout the park. He created multiple green worlds from groves of unique plantings to lake environments that included both roses and a waterfall. McLaren was a fierce advocate for the park’s maintenance and expansion, lobbying to keep the park protected from development. In 1870, the California legislature passed the Golden Gate Park Act, enshrining the 800 acres of dunes as a public park. In addition to his work transforming the park, McLaren also lobbied for the creation of numerous recreational facilities and activities. He developed a network of trails and pathways, as well as courts and fields for tennis, baseball, cricket, and other sports. He even helped to establish the San Francisco Zoo, which was built in the park in 1929.
