Since its creation, it has mainly been used as a Fortified Encampment to represent the power of Kings. Its strategic location was used to control the coal trade within the area, and to guard the mouth of the River Boyne. The castle has been associated with many famous historical figures, including High Kings Cormac Mac Art and Fergus mac Róich and William Marshal, the first Earl of Pembroke.
