Deir el-Medina in Luxor is an ancient village of craftworkers, which was a hub for Tomb Builders, Scribes, Artists, and their families in the Eighteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (1550 -1292 BC). It was located on the west bank of the Nile, opposite from the Valley of the Kings. The village was founded by Pharaoh Amenhotep I and is known for its well-preserved tombs, homes, and tunnel-like passageways that look down onto the Nile. The village was occupied by workers and their families who were responsible for the construction, decoration, and maintenance of the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Surrounding the village is a rich culture which was heavily influenced by religion and the interaction between the nearby villages and the royal court. Many of the artifacts, documents, and wall paintings that were discovered in the area embody the rich culture of the ancient Egyptians. The village was abandoned in the time of Ramesses XI, with residents migrating out of the area by the reign of Ramesses VI.
