The first Mass at Church of the Immaculate Conception was celebrated in June 1879 and the church was finally consecrated in October of that year. The church was built in response to the growing Catholic population of Clontarf at the time and was funded in part by the sale of a nearby field by the nuns of Our Lady's Convent. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.
