Bent Pyramid in Dahshur In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

The Bent Pyramid in Dahshur is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located in the city of Dahshur, Egypt, about 40 km south of Cairo. It was built for the Pharaoh Sneferu, the founder of the fourth dynasty, and is one of the two original “bent” pyramids in Dahshur. The lower part of the pyramid is made of a distinctive red-tinted limestone, and the upper portion is made from Tura limestone. It is estimated to have been constructed in Sneferu’s 26th or 27th regnal year, the fourth year of an additional two-year reign, and was originally thought to have been 147.2m tall but current estimates have it being only 136.45m tall. The Bent Pyramid is unique among pyramids in that its angle of inclination strays from that of the traditional Egyptian pyramids at 43 degrees and changes to 54 degrees near the top. It is thought to have been built in this way because Sneferu realized the structure was not stable and was gradually shifting. The Bent Pyramid has two entrances, one conventional entrance and the second in an unusual position which is partially constructed of granite and brick. There is a third entrance hidden within the pyramid which has not yet been discovered. The Bent Pyramid contains many interesting features such as its engineering development as it has a light weight core with exceptional stability. It is also thought that Sneferu had his workers etch copper bands in the pyramid near the top, which are meant to be echo-producing lines. The Bent Pyramid also houses several chambers for various purposes including a mortuary chapel and the burial chamber of Sneferu. Despite its age and utilization, the Bent Pyramid is in remarkable condition for its age. It is a popular tourist destination and a major archaeological site in Egypt. There are many services offered in order to ensure that visitors can experience the history and atmosphere of this ancient wonder, such as guided tours, audio tours, educational programmes and demonstrations on the restoration of pyramids and ancient buildings.
