Basilica of Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic category-A basilica in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the oldest Catholic parish in the state. History
The history of the basilica dates back to 1841, when the first Catholics in Minnesota came north from Canada. They established the parish at what is now St. Paul's Lowertown. In 1844, the church was constructed and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1870, Bishop Whipple renamed the church St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception. In 1914, the name was changed once again to Basilica of Saint Mary to recognize the importance of the church to the history of Catholicism in Minnesota.
