Worship Method:
Zhaoshan Temple is one of the oldest Zen Buddhist temples in China, located in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. It is often used by temple-goers for meditation, Buddhism-practice and silent retreats. There are several common ways to worship in Zhaoshan temple. The first way is to practice Zen meditation. During this process, devotees sit silently on a cushion or in a chair and focus on one thing (e.g. the breath, a mantra) to cultivate the mind. Having a calm and concentrated mind enables one to be at the present and open to insight, understanding and a connection to the divine. The second way is to prostrate, which is a way of expressing gratitude and devotion to the Buddha. Devotees kneel on the ground and bow their heads, arms and torso three times as a show of reverence and self-surrender. The third way is to chant mantras. Different mantras are recited depending on what type of energy/ atmosphere devotees wish to attract into their surroundings. The most popular mantra is Om Mani Padme Hum, which is considered to be an expression of Bodhicitta or Bodhisattva intent. It is believed to have the power to cleanse the mind and soul, and bring in good luck and blessings. The fourth way to worship is to engage in Dharma study and practice. Dharma, or the teachings of the Buddha, can be a beacon of guidance in understanding how to live life in the right way. By studying Buddhadharma, devotees can gain immense insight into the workings of their lives and relationships. The fifth way is to offer incense, candles and flowers. This is an important ritual for Buddhists as it symbolically honors the three jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Incense is usually burnt in a censer to ask the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for guidance and protection. Candles are lit to symbolize that truth dispels darkness while flowers are used to show appreciation and celebrate life. This most visited temple in China
