History:

The Viking Museum in Ladby, or Vikingemuseet i Ladby, is located at Ladby, in the municipality of Kerteminde on the island of Funen in Denmark. It houses the remains of a Viking ship burial from the late Viking Age, and is the only known example of a Viking ship burial in Denmark. The existence of the ship burial was first known from the description of a local man in 1910. Archaeological work was carried out in 1935-36 and again in 1949. The excavation revealed a grave-chamber consisting of a longship with a draft of 2.5 metres with a peaked roof of split oak logs above the ship. The stern and bow of the ship were visible when the excavation began, and the longship was accompanied by grave goods, including a sword and a richly furnished woman’s grave. The remains of the ship have been preserved in situ and since 1974, have been housed in a museum building, situated at the burial site. The museum displays the entrance to the grave chamber, the bone of the old oak tree that formed the roof, and two of the grave finds; a large Viking sword and a small ornamented knife. The museum also houses a variety of other objects, such as household items and tools, which illustrate the day-to-day life of the local Viking communities. In addition, the museum has a large collection of local handicrafts and artifacts from the Viking Age.
