History:
The Viking Center Fyrkat is located in the small town of Hobro in northern Denmark. The site is a reconstructed Iron Age ring fortress from the 9th century AD. It was originally excavated in the late 19th century before being reconstructed in the 1960s and includes a museum, cafe and gift shop. The origins of the Viking Center Fyrkat can be traced back to the Iron Age. This is a period in northern European history which dates from the 9th century to the 11th century AD. During this time, the Vikings became a seafaring people and began to expand their influence and control throughout Europe and beyond. The first evidence of an Iron Age Viking fortification in Denmark dates to the 8th century AD and was excavated near the modern-day village of Østerby. This Iron Age fortification was known as Fyrkat and was the first of its kind in the country. Fyrkat was a circular fortification surrounded by a ditch and palisade. Around the central area were four equal rectangular projections. Inside the fort was a large building which was likely the dwelling of the chieftain. There was also a smaller structure which contained a large hearth. In the late 19th century, the ruins of Fyrkat were excavated by a group of local antiquarians and it was during this time that the site of the Viking Center Fyrkat was established. In the early 1960s, the reconstructed walls and buildings were opened to the public and the first museum was established. Since then, the museum has continued to expand and now offers interactive exhibits, educational activities and a café and gift shop. Today, the Viking Center Fyrkat is a popular tourist destination. It provides visitors with a unique insight into the history of the Iron Age in Denmark and the Viking era. You must visit one of these historical places in Denmark on your Denmark tour
