Unas Pyramid in Saqqara In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

Unas Pyramid in Saqqara is a pyramid located in the ancient Saqqara necropolis near Cairo, Egypt. It is the final resting place of the ancient Egyptian ruler Unas, who reigned in the Fifth Dynasty (c. 2494-2345 BCE). Unas' pyramid is believed to have been heavily looted prior to the excavation in 1881 CE, overseen by Mariette, so much of its treasures have been lost to antiquity. The remaining elements include the pyramid complex, temples, and the causeway which leads from the entrance to the king's chamber. The pyramid complex is the result of the reuse of existing limestone structures, most of which pre-dated the reign of Unas. Unas' pyramid is significant as it contains elements of both the pyramid and mastaba design, making it the first of its kind. The pyramid itself is 56 meters (184 feet) square at the base and stands around 43 meters (139 feet) tall. Some of the inscriptions which were found on the walls of the chamber were believed to have been the earliest written in history and significantly predated the texts found in the pyramids of later kings such as Pepi I and Pepi II. The pyramid and its accompanying motifs also feature significant parts of the Pyramid Texts, the oldest known religious writings in history which were composed for the benefit of the afterlife of kings and likely predated the 5th Dynasty. The services provided at Unas Pyramid include the preservation and protection of the monuments, artifacts and hieroglyphic inscriptions found on the site. The pyramid is an important cultural attraction and provides visitors with guided tours and educational materials to learn more about ancient Egypt. Additionally, the pyramid is maintained regularly and is open to the public for visits and tours.
