Worship Method:

Tongwadian is a traditional Confucian Temple worship practiced by the people of Dali, China. It is a veneration of ancestors and ancestors’ spirits through offerings of meals at an altar with a statue of the ancestor. This temple worship is an important part of Dali's ancient culture and still practiced today. The ceremony begins by first preparing an altar with offerings such as food, flowers, fruit, incense, and paper money. The ancestor statue is placed facing towards the south before the offerings are placed at the altar and burned. The offering is burned as a way to pay respect and appease the spirits of the deceased. After the offerings are made, the worshippers will kneel and bow three times to the ancestor statue, chanting a prayer for a peaceful transition for the deceased ancestors into the afterlife. Afterwards, a paper called the “jincaigong” is burned. It is an offering that symbolizes wealth and is believed to bring blessings to the family. The final step of the ceremony is the burning of three pieces of incense. This is done to honor and venerate the ancestors and ask for blessings for the family. The ceremony is an important part of Dali culture and is still practiced today. Every family in Dali will practice Tongwadian at least once a year to pay respects to their ancestors and ask for their blessings. This most visited temple in China
