History:

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) was founded in 1935 by Trustees of the San Francisco Art Association, with the goal of establishing an art museum of high national caliber in the Bay Area. SFMOMA began with an exhibition of works by modern masters, along with contemporary American and European art. The museum moved to its current home—a renovated courthouse designed by architects Mario Ciampi and Pam Anderson—in 1995. Since then, the museum has expanded greatly, with over 32,000 square feet for galleries, a 330-seat auditorium, library and media center, two restaurants, and a retail store. SFMOMA is now renowned as one of the most influential contemporary art museums in the world. The museum’s permanent collection holds over 27,000 works of art, ranging from modern masters like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró to works by contemporary artists such as Tauba Auerbach, Matthew Barney, and Kara Walker.
