History:

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is located in New York City and is one of the most famous and influential modern art museums in the world. The museum’s iconic design and outstanding collection have made it an iconic symbol of modernism. The idea for a modern art museum was conceived by a small group of cultured New York art collectors in the early 1900s. In the early years, these collectors – who included Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (John D. Rockefeller’s daughter); Lillie P. Bliss; Mary Quinn Sullivan; and her sister, Flora Payne Whitney – presented modern art exhibitions at the the Weyhe Gallery on 57th Street. In 1929, they opened The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with a mission to “acquire, conserve, research, and develop a collection of Visual Arts and to study and promote public knowledge of their work.” The museum’s first purchases included such iconic works as Claude Monet’s Water Lilies and Matisse’s Dance. In subsequent years it enriched its collection with works by Picasso, Klee, de Chirico, Mondrian, Pollock, and countless others. The original building on 53rd Street was designed by Philip L. Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone and opened in 1939. After outgrowing its space and undergoing several expansions, the museum relocated its entire collection to a new building on West 53rd Street (now known as MoMA's main building) in 1984. This building, designed by Arata Isozaki with Phillip Johnson, was deemed an architectural masterpiece. The museum now occupies 3.5-acres and has over 200,000 square feet of gallery space. The museum continues to evolve and expand. It maintains a strong commitment to its original mission of bringing the best of modern and contemporary art from around the world to the public. MoMA is now a major force in the art world – both as a museum and as an educational institution. You must visit one of these historical places in USA on your USA tour
