History:

St. Peter’s Catholic Church was founded in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Constantine on the site of a previous cemetery where St. Peter was thought to be buried. The current 138-foot-tall church was completed in the 1630s and is the work of architect Giacomo della Porta and the much celebrated Michelangelo. The site includes the tomb of St. Peter, a basilica, several chapels and tombs of other popes and cardinals, a museum, and a gift shop.
