The parish of St Barnabas was established in 1876, when part of the parish of St John the Evangelist was made into a new parish for the people of the newly developed district of Pear Tree. The red sandstone church building was designed by architect John Oldrid Scott and built between 1878 and 1880. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
