Southwark Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral located in Southwark, London that dates back to the 12th century. It is the mother church of the Diocese of Southwark in the Church of England. The history of Southwark Cathedral is closely linked with the story of the Church of England, as well as the growth of Southwark as a place of worship. It has seen royal events, including royal weddings, and many eminent figures, such as Prince Philip, Countess of Wessex have visited the cathedral. It also played an important role in the pilgrimage to London during the medieval period. Southwark Cathedral Facts • Southwark Cathedral is the oldest Gothic church in London and dates back to the 12th century. • The cathedral has three towers – the crossing tower, the north tower and the South Tower – constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries. • Southwark Cathedral has been through numerous rebuilds over the centuries, with the most recent in 1996. • There are over 40 memorials and brasses in the Southwark Cathedral. • Many eminent figures, such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, have been associated with the cathedral. • Southwark Cathedral is a Grade I listed building and is on the list of ‘buildings of special architectural or historical interest’ by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Southwark Cathedral Services Services at the Southwark Cathedral are held regularly throughout the week, including regular services for Holy Communion and Evensong, as well as special services throughout the Christian year. The cathedral has a rich musical tradition and regular concerts are held. There is also a weekly Sunday School for children. Other activities including talks, lectures, exhibitions, and educational tours are also held at the cathedral.
