History:

The story of the Virgin of Guadalupe began on December 9, 1531, when an indigenous man, Juan Diego, encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary atop the Hill of Tepeyac. She identified herself as the Virgin of Guadalupe and requested that Juan Diego ask the local bishop to build a shrine in her honor. The bishop asked for proof of her divine identity, and she responded by filling Juan Diego’s cape with miraculous roses from winter and leaving a miraculous portrait of herself on its fabric. The Bishop was convinced, and the first church at Our Lady of Guadalupe was built in 1531. Over the centuries, the shrine has been expanded, renovated, and fully restored in 1976, becoming the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.
