Santuario de Guadalupe is a historic shrine located in Mexico City, Mexico. It honors the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the indigenous peasant Juan Diego in December 1531. The church complex was built in 1709, and over time it has become a major religious center for the predominantly Catholic population of Mexico. The shrine of Juan Diego is situated in the chapel above the main altar, and believers come to see his cloak with its miraculous image of Mary. Visitors can also explore the upper level of the building to see the array of statues, paintings, and shrines dedicated to religious figures and events. The main prayer services offered at the site are Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and Benediction.
