Architecture:
Sancaklar Mosque, designed by EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture in İstanbul, is a modern iteration of Islamic architecture, combining traditional values with contemporary solutions. The façade is made from plain concrete and consists of a geometric pattern that reaches up towards the sky and fades away in the distant horizon. Inside the mosque, the floor plan is defined by a shell-like form in a “double recurve” which hugs the entire interior. This shape provides a single, long uninterrupted space, increasing the perception of piousness and community. In the middle lies the Mihrab, the focal point of the interior. It includes an oculus directing the light from the sky onto the Mihrab, representing the divine power. The other main elements of the mosque are the Minbar and the Sahn, the open courtyard. These are separated from each other by two interior walls. Between them, natural light brings life to the mosque, filtering through a glass facade and intertwining with the geometric pattern of the interior walls. The overall result is a truly majestic space that embraces its visitors. On the outside, the building also stands out from its surroundings. The perforated concrete façade is juxtaposed with the flowing skirts of the shell-like structure. Equipped with a green roof, the mosque is both functional and aesthetically advanced. Thanks to its unique design, Sancaklar Mosque is considered one of the biggest milestones in modern Islamic architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
