History:
The Rhine Valley has been an important trade route and a desirable area of settlement for centuries, and the first traces of humans occupying the area date back to the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. German tribes such as the Alemans, which were a confederation of Germanic peoples, began to occupy the area in the early centuries AD and pushed other tribes further east. The area then grew in importance with the rise of the Holy Roman Empire beginning in the 11th century. By the early 15th century, the Rhineland had become one of the major areas of economic activity for the Holy Roman Empire and was an important area for salt mining and wine production. The Rhine then became a major commercial artery for German states with the advent of the steam ships in the 19th century, and the valley rapidly grew in importance. Development around the Rhine was encouraged by many of the German states, and the area around the river was an important commercial center as well as a popular tourist destination. By the end of World War II, the Rhine Valley had been destroyed by Allied bombing, but industrial and residential reconstruction began almost immediately afterwards. At the same time, freight transport increased dramatically with the completion of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal (RMDC), which connected the Rhine with the Danube and allowed for the transportation of goods between Germany and Austria. Today the Rhine Valley is an important region for agricultural and commercial activities in Germany, and is a popular tourist destination. The rural landscape reflects centuries of human development and activity and the river is an important highway for goods in the country.
