The Orthodox Christian Church in Nigeria has its beginnings with the missionary work of the Russian Orthodox Church in the north of Nigeria in the late 19th century. The Nigerian mission of the Russian Orthodox Church was established in 1896, with the founding of the Nikolaevsk Community by the Bishop of Astrakhan. The mission was officially recognized as an autonomous Orthodox Church in 1917, at the same time as the independence of Nigeria from British colonial rule. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Nigeria.
