Odeonsplatz is a popular public square located in Munich, Germany. It was first laid out in 1816 and named after the demolished Odeon hall on the site. History:

The Odeonsplatz area in Munich, Germany, has a rich history that dates back centuries to the time of the rule of the Bavarian dukes and the subsequent reign of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The area surrounding Odeonsplatz was originally part of the city’s cavalry barracks and was referred to as the Odeonsplatzvorstadt. After being used in numerous parades during the 18th century, the area began to be developed, leading to the construction of many important buildings in the area. In 1854, a new building was commissioned for the Monopteros on Odeonsplatz, which was constructed in a Grecian-Doric style. The original building was destroyed during World War II, only to be rebuilt in 1983 to its original design. In the late 19th century, the Odeonsplatz area began to change drastically, going from a relatively small area of development to an ornate and elegant enclave of culture, art and music. This escalated when Maximilian and his wife decided to redesign the area in the new style of Neoclassicism. This included the construction of several grand buildings such as the Feldherrnhalle, the modern Odeon Theater and the twin towers connected by a hallowed arcade. During this time, Odeonsplatz also became an important gathering place for political demonstrations and speeches, becoming a symbolic center of the city. In 1944, Odeonsplatz and some of its buildings were damaged from World War II bombings. However, the buildings were all restored in time for the opening of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, giving the area an economic and cultural boost. In more recent years, the Odeonsplatz square itself has remained relatively unchanged, while nearby buildings such as the Nationaltheater have been restored to its original form.
