Nefertari Temple at Abu Simbel In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

Nefertari Temple at Abu Simbel is an ancient temple complex located in southern Egypt, on the western bank of the Nile. It is believed to have been built by Ramesses II between 1279 and 1213 BCE. The temple was dedicated to Nefertari, the Great Royal Wife of Ramesses II and its walls are decorated with scenes from the couple's life together, as well as images representing the gods of ancient Egypt. The complex includes two large rock-cut temples, one dedicated to Amun-Ra and his consorts, Mut and Khonsu, and the other to Ptah and Nefertari. The courtyard is surrounded by a large number of small shrines and statues, making it a stunning example of ancient Egyptian architecture and art. The temple was rediscovered in 1813, although it had been buried beneath a massive sand dune for centuries. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
