The National Maritime Museum in Helsingør, Denmark was founded in 1914 by Dr. Eirik Staal and originally housed in the "terraced house" which was a former manor house in the old city of Helsingør. The museum was established to showcase the maritime history of Denmark, including one of the world's most important collections of maritime art, ship models, naval uniforms, and navigational instruments. In 1972, the museum moved to a new building on the Helsingør waterfront. The new building has an exhibition space of 1,400 m2, and includes a permanent exhibition called "Navigatorestivalen" which traces the history of sailing, navigation, and shipbuilding from their beginnings in the early 1300s to modern-day ocean-going vessels. This exhibition also includes a number of reconstructions of old ships and shipbuilding techniques.
