History:
Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Germany was founded in 1883 as the first museum for the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum and opened on April 29, 1902. The opening was a big event—with the authoritarian Kaiser Wilhelm II in attendance. Construction of the building cost roughly one million Marks. The museum was initially intended to showcase great works of the past in order to promote an appreciation of the fine arts. Over the years, its collections have expanded to include a variety of artwork, including modern art from the 20th century. It presently houses more than 100,000 works of art, spanning from antiquity to the present. The museum has been at the forefront of cultural education in Germany. The museum director at the time, Dr. Carl Gunther Pape, was a passionate advocate for open access to art and culture. He wrote a series of educational tours and artist-led workshops to promote an understanding of art history. In the interwar period, Kunstpalast was fully involved in the political debates of its time and was renamed the National Gallery in 1933. After the end of World War II, the museum faced further changes; it was closed for some years and re-opened under the name of Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Düsseldorf, or Düsseldorf State Art Collections. Today, Museum Kunstpalast is a leading institution of international standing. It focuses on contemporary art, hosting major international exhibitions on its regular basis. It also houses a library and archive with over 70,000 titles and valuable periodicals. The museum is dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Carl Gunter Pape—a champion for safeguarding the freedom of art.
