History:

Mount Huangshan, or Yellow Mountain, is located in the southern part of Anhui Province in the east of China and is home to some of China’s most spectacular landscapes. It is easy to see why Huangshan has been a site for pilgrimage and spiritual contemplation over the centuries and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. The history of the region dates back thousands of years and ancient legends claim the mountain was created when two heavenly friends, an old man and a boy, came to the region carrying a sack of yellow soil and transformed the land to create the mountain with its stunning rock formations and majestic height. During the Alexander the Great’s invasion of Persia in the 4th century BC, the Persian Magi fled to Mount Huangshan, which is where they established their ‘Lamaist’ religion. It is for this reason that mountain’s main peak is known as the South Sea of Persia. The mountain’s natural beauty has long attracted tourists and painters. The Tang dynasty poet Li Bai praised the mountain’s beauty in his work, making Mount Huangshan famous throughout China. In the Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368) and early Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), many painters, including those from the famous Wu school of painting, visited the mountain and painted dozens of stunning frescoes. During the Ming Dynasty, the mountain was officially opened to travelers and during the Qing Dynasty (Kangxi Emperor–Qianlong Emperor) a road with 14 stone staircases was built on the mountain. This allowed pilgrims to come from all over to visit Huangshan. Today, Mount Huangshan remains one of the most stunning corners of China and thousands of people visit each year to admire its beauty.
