History:

The Kharkiv Historical Museum, located in the city of Kharkiv in Russia, is an educational and cultural museum that showcases historical artifacts, documents, and objects associated with the history of Kharkiv and surrounding areas. Established in 1918, the museum is one of the oldest public museums in the country. The original collection of works was acquired from the collections of local noble families, such as the Stroganovs and the Potemkins. The museum’s museum director, Vasily Zolotarev, had a wide circle of contacts among famous scholars, diplomats, and others, who sought to promote regional culture and history. These contacts helped acquire a vast collection of works, such as works from the Novorossiysk Institute and the Archaeological and Ethnographic Commission, paintings by famous Ukrainian artists, and other works of folk art. In 1964, a new five-story building was constructed to house the museum. This building was decorated with Tiffany windows, neoclassical columns, and a grand hall, which could house nearly 300,000 artifacts. The museum was unique in that it was the first public museum in the entire Soviet Union to open an exhibit that dealt with religion and with religious artifacts from all over the world. This helped promote a better understanding of the museum’s audacious mission – to spread scientific knowledge and appreciation of different cultures. Today, the Kharkiv Historical Museum houses over 420,000 artifacts, including works of art, manuscripts, photographs, books, and other historical objects. It is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the cultural heritage of the Kharkiv region, as well as the history of the city of Kharkiv. Its collections are used to educate the public about the history of the area, to promote a better understanding of different cultures, and to encourage further research into Kharkiv’s past.
