History:

Jönköping County Museum, or Närkesläns Museum, is located in Jönköping, Sweden and has existed in one form or another since 1873. The museum, which is one of the longest-running in the country, is dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts and documents related to the natural and human history of Jönköping County. The museum was initially established in 1873 as part of the Jönköping Biological Station, which was part of Uppsala University. Its mission was to collect and archive specimens from the Jönköping area for research and study. It moved to the city center in 1895 and soon developed into a more comprehensive institution dedicated to the preservation of natural and cultural history. A more expansive collection of artifacts was moved into the building in 1901, and it was officially inaugurated as Närkesläns Museum in 1910. Its collections subsequently grew to include items from all over the world including archeological and ethnological artifacts, replicas of traditional Swedish homes, and various tools used throughout history. In 1952, the museum moved to new buildings near Slottsparken. It was reorganized and several departments were added. In 1995, the library and archives were opened.
