History:
The Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Museum is located in Cusco, Peru and commemorates the life and work of the famous Inca historian Garcilaso de la Vega. The writer, known as the “Inca of Letters”, spent much of his life researching and cataloguing the history of the Inca people. He is best known for his work, the Royal Commentaries of the Incas, which he wrote in 1609. Garcilaso de la Vega was born in Cusco in 1539. His father was a Spanish conquistador, and his mother was an Inca princess who had been taken as a wife by his father. Garcilaso de la Vega was held in high regard by both sides of his family, given the combination of his Spanish and Inca heritage. He was given the nickname “The Inca of Letters” for his work in recording Inca history and culture. In 1736, the Church of San Francisco in Cusco built an altar dedicated to Garcilaso de la Vega, who is considered a saint by some members of the Catholic church. In 1891 the House of Memory was opened in Cusco, dedicated to Garcilaso de la Vega and his efforts to preserve Inca heritage and culture. The House of Memory was merged with the Cusco Municipal Library in 1949, and this became the basis of the current Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Museum. It was moved to its current premises in 1995, having previously been situated in the Islamic-Moorish style palace of the Marquis of San Miguel de Aguayo around the Plaza de Armas in Cusco. Today, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Museum houses a collection of manuscripts and objects related to Inca history. It also contains an exhibition of the works of artists associated with the museum, as well as works from the colonial period.
