History:

The Frilandsmuseet (Open Air Museum), Sorgenfri was founded in 1897 by the Society for Preservation of Ancient Danish Monuments, and is now the oldest and largest open-air museum in the world. Located on the island of Sorgenfri, near Copenhagen, Denmark, the museum preserves and displays traditional Danish agricultural and folk culture. The area of the museum was chosen as it was a popular spot for wealthy Copenhageners since the 1700s. It has been a site of great importance to King Christian IX since 1853, as it was the home of his two daughters Dagmar and Alexandra. The area became known as “Sorgenfri” (literally meaning “sorrow-free”) to reflect his joy that they were happy and healthy. The original idea for the museum was to create a living monument to the traditional culture of Denmark. The founder, C.F. Soderberg, selected a range of buildings from all over the country to be moved to the site and accurately-recreated. These buildings included farms, windmills, houses, and other sorts of buildings. In 1934, the museum began developing its restoration workshop, where craftsmen work to restore old tools, artifacts, and techniques to maintain the preservation of Denmark's traditional culture. During the Second World War, the museum was used as a meeting place where folklore dances and traditional music performances were held. After the war, the museum’s focus shifted towards the presentation of historical artifacts and architecture, and in 1954, the historic gardens, filled with trees, flower borders, and vegetable patches, were opened. In recent years, new attractions have been added to the open-air museum, including a reconstructed Viking village, a cultural center, an educational farm, a Forestry Museum, and various events.
