History:

Fregatten Jylland, located in Ebeltoft, Denmark, is the contribution of a 19th century ship builder named Captain Niels Juel. The boat was ordered by the Danish Navy and was originally constructed in 1848. Fregatten Jylland was built for the purpose of defending Denmark from the ongoing threat of German naval attack. The ship was originally powered by wind and was considered much faster than the competition. The Fregatten Jylland was initially used for coastal patrol and defense and was subsequently involved in the Danish-Prussian war of 1863. During the war, the Fregatten Jylland was part of the naval force that defeated the enemy’s fleet in a battle near the islets of Drogden. Following the war, the boat was taken out of service and used as a government survey ship. By the start of the 20th century, Fregatten Jylland had become obsolete and was eventually put up for public auction. The ship was bought by Ebeltoft Ship Owner Johannes Hansen, who refurbished the boat and transformed it into a brig. In 1906, the boat was put to use as a training vessel for local apprentices, teaching them the tricks of the trade. From 1920 onwards, members of the local chapter of the Danish Naval League began to use Fregatten Jylland as a floating museum.
