El Alamein War Cemetery In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

El Alamein War Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the Commonwealth and Commonwealth nations' servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives during the Second World War in the North African Campaign. It is located in El Alamein in Egypt, about 60 miles west of Alexandria. It is one of the best churches in Egypt which you must visit.

History:

The cemetery was designed by Sir Hubert Worthington and was established in 1951 by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It was built to honour the men and women who died in the famous Battle of El Alamein, which was fought in the desert of North Africa during the Second World War from the 23rd October to the 4th November 1942. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.

The cemetery contains a total of 6,237 graves - 4,579 British, 1,199 Commonwealth and Indian, 472 Polish, and 87 German. The cemetery is looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
