The Edward Street Methodist Church was founded in 1878, a rebuilding of a previous Wesleyan chapel which was located on the same site. The Church was designed by local architect, Thomas Cator and funded by public subscription. In 1895, the Sunday school was extended and a new hall was built. The building was partially damaged by fire in 1939 but was rebuilt and opened for worship in March 1941. In 1963, the church underwent major refurbishment which included the extension of the church hall and the rearranging of seating within the church.
