Discover - Cisterna Romana - Fact, History and Travel Information
Cisterna Romana is an ancient Roman water reservoir located in the Appian Way, near modern Rome, Italy. It was built in the 2nd century AD to supply aqueducts with water obtained from an underground spring located outside the walls of Rome. Cisterna Romana was the last of five cisterns built in and around Rome, and it was the largest. Its capacity was about 25,000 cubic meters (850,000 cubic feet) and could serve up to 50,000 people. After its construction, it quickly became one of the most visited places in Rome.
Today, Cisterna Romana is still a popular tourist destination, and visitors can explore the underground chamber and appreciate its enormous size and grandeur. The cistern is still in excellent condition and visitors can gain access to it via a set of stairs on the Appian Way. Inside the cistern, visitors can find an inverted dome and 16 Corinthian columns. Archaeologists have also identified several ancient statues, including depictions of the goddess Minerva and Oceanus, the god of the ocean.
