The cemetery is the final resting place of those who died in the great wars of the 20th century, including those from Germany and other countries. The cemetery also has over 40,000 tombs with monuments, headstones and crosses. It covers around 15 hectares (37 acres) with a chapel and a small museum to pay respects to the dead. The cemetery also has a small museum dedicated to the history of modern warfare and the stories of those who died at the battles of Castel San Pietro Romano. Day trips to the cemetery are available from Rome, with visitors able to explore the tombs, the memorials and the museum.
