Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi (built by Egyptian monks) is a World Heritage Site in Syria. It was founded in the 5th century by St. Moses the Black, one of the renowned Coptic hermits in Christian history. This monastery is of importance to the spiritual community in the area, as it is one of the few preserved monastic complexes in the Middle East that still house living Christian monks and nuns. The monastery is nestled in the mountains of rural Syria, just south of Damascus, and it has been a place of refuge, both physical and spiritual, for thousands of years. The complex comprises various structures, including a chapel, a monastic school, a library, and a bedouin hostel, where visitors can stay and enjoy the serenity of the surrounding valleys. The monastery also provides services to the local community, such as free medical treatment, education and training seminars, and the preservation of rare manuscripts.
