Originally called Alexandria Pohick Church, the church was established by an Act of Assembly in 1765 and initially stood on the site of what is now the Christ Church Cemetery. In 1800 the church was renamed as the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Alexandria. During the Civil War, the church was used as a temporary hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
