The church was founded in 1866 by the Rev. Thomas E. Merrigan to serve the growing Irish Catholic population in the Lower East Side. The early congregation held Mass at a nearby Public School and then acquired the present site at 20 Monroe Street in 1869. The cornerstone of the present building was laid in 1874. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Denmark.
