History:

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (CRBGPB) is a state-approved non-profit institution, established in March 1987 with the mission of advancing the conservation of giant pandas and other endangered species in Sichuan, China. The institution is devoted to the science and research of giant pandas’ behavior as well as the protection of the animal. The base is located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, Sichuan Province and covers an area of 92 acres (37 hectares). Before it became the CRBGPB, the land had been part of the famed Dujiangyan Irrigation System, which has been in use since the 3rd century BC. In appreciation of the ancient engineering feat, the Chinese government decided to conserve part of the area and turn it into a research and breeding centre. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was officially established in 1987. It was the first scientifically managed Giant Panda breeding institution in the world. The Chengdu Research Base is historically renowned worldwide for pioneering the propagation and rearing of baby pandas, with several pandas born at the facility since the early 1990s. This began with their first baby panda, Xiaomeng, born in 1990. In September 2010, the Centre was declared a national demonstration centre for wildlife conservation and research, in accordance with the China Species Conservation Law. The CRBGPB serves to protect, protect and restore the species in a natural habitat as possible. The base has become a model for all the other giant panda breeding centres around the world, with more than 200 trained professionals on staff working to ensure the wellbeing of the giant pandas. It also serves as a research facility for scientists in both China and abroad to further the knowledge of the endangered species and their conservation. In addition to its animal protection and research efforts, the facility also works to engage the public to increase global awareness of the plight of the Giant Panda and their need for conservation and protection. Visitors can view the animals and take part in educational programs about the giant pandas. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has become an iconic symbol of Sichuan’s environmental protection efforts and is proving vital to the efforts to secure the survival of this endangered species.
