The original plans for the cathedral were made in the 19th century by Alfredo Lopez Linazasoro, a Madrid-born architect. Construction began in 1883 and the church was consecrated in 1895. It suffered extensive damage during the Spanish Civil War and underwent two major renovations in the 1950s and 1960s. It was finally completed in 1993 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Spain.
