The basilica dates back to the 4th or 5th century and has undergone several major renovations over the centuries, including a major renovation in 1599 by Carlo Maderno. The basilica features two cylindrical towers, a large apse with 13th-century mosaics, and a façade with reliefs of angels and saints carved by Stefano Maderno. Inside the basilica are several artworks, including paintings by Pietro da Cortona and frescoes by Domenichino, as well as a crypt containing St. Cecilia's burial chamber. The basilica hosts musical festivals, classical concerts, and tours year-round. It is also the site of several important cultural events, including a May procession celebrating St. Cecilia and a December concert in her honor.
