The Russian Orthodox Church in Tunisia was established in 1875 and has its headquarters in the city of Tunis. It is the main religious organization representing the Russian orthodox faith in the country. It is part of the Patriarchate of Moscow, under the jurisdiction of His Beatitude, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. It assembles members of the Russian diaspora in Tunis and provides them with spiritual guidance and education. It is one of the best churches in Tunisia which you must visit.

History:

The first Orthodox mission was established in Tunisia in the 19th century by Russian emigrants, and was officially recognized by the Ottoman Government during World War I in 1914. The first chapel was built in Tunis and was later followed by the construction of the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky. The full church jurisdiction was established in 1920 by a Decree of Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow and was elevated to the rank of diocese in 1939. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tunisia.
