History:
The cathedral was built in 1989, replacing an earlier cathedral of the same name which had been destroyed in the Tunisian Revolution of 1987. The cathedral is named for Saint Vincent of Paul and Saint Olivia of Palermo, the patron saints of Tunisia. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tunisia.

The cathedral contains various shrines, including the Shrine to St Romanus, Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Tunis, as well as shrines to St Lorraine, St Paul of the Cross and other saints. The main altar is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The cathedral is a major site of Christian pilgrimage in Tunis, and regular liturgical services are celebrated there, including Christian marriage ceremonies. Other services include Sunday Masses, funeral Masses and novenas.
